Description:

Social movements throughout the hemisphere are fighting for a better future; one where land & indigenous rights are recognized and communities have control over their resources. But, how do they tell this story when the corporate media is controlled by those they are fighting against: a powerful few who exploit resources for profit and repress the movements that challenge their greed.

From the 2002 dubbed "Media Coup" in Venezuela, when popularly-elected President Chávez was temporarily ousted from power while the private media outlets continued to air re-runs of soap operas instead of showing the massive popular mobilization in support of the President, control of the media has moved from the margins and has become a core tenet for social movements building popular power in defiance of state repression. In Oaxaca, Mexico when the 2006 teacher's strike grew into a full fledged popular uprising, women led a take-over of corporate and state media outlets, in protest against the complete media black-out of the popular rebellion.

Today, a similar show-down is taking place in Honduras, where the popularly-elected president Zelaya has been removed from power through a coup d'etat- orchestrated by US-trained School of the Americas graduates. As people are mobilizing for the return of their president and an end to state repression, community media again emerges as a key battle ground for this conflict.

Join us for an evening of discussion on the struggle against neo-liberalism and state repression and the role that corporate, state, and community media plays.

Presenters:

Ramor Ryan, is an Irish anarchist writer who has been living in Chiapas, Mexico for 6 years and reports on popular struggle from Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Central America. He has written for a wide variety of radical newspapers, magazines, and books, including Upsidedownworld.org. He is the author of "Clandestines: The Pirate Journals of an Irish Exile."

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, is the Campaign Director for the Prometheus Radio Project and has worked with the Urban Land Committee and Community Councils in Venezuela for the last four years.

Adrienne Pine is a militant anthropologist, assistant professor at American University in D.C., and author of "Working Hard, Drinking Hard, on Violence and Survival in Honduras." She blogs at www.quotha.net.

plus, a mini-report-back from Andy Gunn, technical organizer with the Prometheus radio Project who just returned from Honduras, where he was helping to maintain Radio Lenca, a community radio station in La Esperanza, Honduras.

Los movimientitos sociales de las América están luchando por un futuro mejor; en cual los derechos de la tierra y de los indígenas son respetados y los recursos de una comunidad son controlado por la comunidad misma. Pero, como cuenten sus historias cuando los medios privados están en las manos de sus mismos enemigos; los pocos que explotan la tierra y el pueblo en el nombre de ganancia y que contestan la resistencia del pueblo con represión.

Desde el "golpe mediático" en Venezuela, cuando se quitaran al Presidente Chávez del poder y todos las canales privadas estaban trasmitiendo telenovelas mientras el pueblo se organizó, llenando las calles con manifestaciones, quien controla los medios es una tema central para los movimientos populares.

En Oaxaca, cuando la huelga de maestros se convirtió en una rebelión popular, mujeres tomaron los medios privados y estatales en protesta de no contar sobre la verdad y la realidad de la rebelión.

Hoy en día, una lucha parecida está pasando en Honduras, donde el Presidente Zelaya fue quitado del poder por un golpe militar, dirigido por un General que estudio en los estados unidos (School of the Americas.) Mientras el pueblo se organiza en demanda del regreso de su presidente y contra la represión, los medios comunitarios juegan un rol importante en el conflicto.

Únete por una noche de presentaciones sobre la lucha contra el neoliberalismo y la represión estadal y el rol que juega de los medios privados, estatales y comunitarios.
